ABOUT
TRI-COUNTY SQUARES is a modern square dance club which was organized in Tillsonburg in 2005. Dancers range in age from 15 to 94. They currently dance weekly Wednesdays at basic and mainstream levels from September to April at the Tillsonburg Senior Centre, 45 Hardy Ave., Tillsonburg.
FOCUS ON OUR CALLER
Dancers in South Western Ontario are fortunate to be able to dance to a great slate of skilled and interesting callers. We are privileged to have as our caller one of the best in the southwestern district, Tom Charlton.
Tom and his wife Linda began dancing in 1982 and Tom began learning to call modern square dancing around 1986 when Bill Blaney, the caller for St. Thomas Awaywegos, first encouraged and provided Tom opportunities to begin his career in modern square dance calling. Tom taught groups in halls, basements of homes and school gymnasiums for many years and has been a guest caller at many of the existing clubs in the London area and for special dances.
He has been dance leader for the following clubs – Luton Squares 1992-2000, Simcoe Star-a-Naders 1995 – 2005, Brantford Village Squares 1997-2010, Strathroy Swinging Duos 1998- to present, Iona Fancy Foot 2005 - 2009, Tillsonburg Tri-County Squares 2005 to present.
Tom has served at a dance leader at two National Conventions. He and Linda both give back lots to the square dance community, serving as former chair of Caller’s Clinic and as part of the group who promoted the ABC programme to promote dancing, on the executive of SWOSDA, and now as SWOSDA secretary. They have also served as presidents of Swinging Wheels, a camping club which dances at Forest Fairgrounds.
Although now residing in Aylmer they still farm on the family farm in Malahide.
They raised 2 sons and 2 daughters, all married university graduates with successful jobs. Tom and Linda are now enjoying spending time with their grandchildren.
On Nov. 21, 2011 they were presented with a well - deserved Trillium Merit Award by the Ontario Federation of Square and Round Dancers.
